Cherry blossoms, Sakura 桜

We hope that the typical flowering process and viewing spots in Kamakura shown below will be a good reference for your Cherry blossom viewing.

  Overview - Past years

Late March to early April is the best times for the Sakura-Cherry blossom viewing in Kamakura.  However, it deviates somewhat back and forth depending on the weather condition every year and the flowering status at each place is not necessarily the same.

first half of Mar.

It's unusually warm in the first half of March and many cherry buds grew first like as they were about to open flowers even in mid March.  JMA announced a forecast that cherry blossoms will be in full bloom about ten days earlier than the past years.

However, it turned cold in the middle of the month and snow fell on the 21st in the Kanto-greater Tokyo area. Snow in late March here was also unusual.  Finally, cherry blossoms began blooming just a little earlier than the past years.

Early Apr, 2017

Strong southern onshore wind came, which blew off many petals.  That was Hanafubuki, 桜吹雪- shower of cherry petals.

= FYI =

"Sakura Kaika Sengen" 開花宣言 is "the declaration that the cherry blossoms have started to bloom".

But, that declaration is announced when the officials of the Meteorological Agency can confirm the 5 to 6 flowers having opened in a Someiyoshino tree determined as the sample tree by each prefecture.

So, good time to see usually comes about one week after the Sakura Kaika Sengen.

= Other kinds =

Kaido

Tamanawa

Kawazu

When we call Sakura and Hanami, it means that the flower is Someiyoshino そめいよしの, the most standard cherry blossoms.

Besides Someiyoshino, we can enjoy early flowering Sakura such as Tamanawa Sakura 玉縄桜 and Kawazu Sakura 河津桜.  It's nice to view those cherry blossoms together with Ume-plum blossoms before Someiyoshino began blooming.

Kaido カイドウ is also a popular flower, which opens flowers almost at the same time of Someiyoshino.  Kaido is not Sakura-kind, but looks like a Sakura with deep red flowers..

  * This article is based on the Someiyoshino standard cherry.

  Sakura viewing spots

We introduce representative viewing spots as follows, but you will be able to see nice scenes at other places and even roadsides.  Walking around to find your favorite places and to see the difference of the flowering status at each spot are also a way of enjoying Kamakura's cherry blossoms.

The best time for Hanami (花見, Cherry blossom viewing) came late last week in Kamakura. We can enjoy fully blooming Sakura - cherry flowers all around the city this week end, while some trees are already loosing flowers like at Myohonji, Jojuin, and Hokaiji.

Ironically, the best time means that the end of Hanami season is coming.

Cherry flowers last for just 2 weeks at most once they blossom. Usually a windy day comes during that period and shortens viewing times.

That end by the wind is one of the best viewing moments because we can enjoy Hanafubuki (shower of petals). It is fantastic to see Hanafubuki if it occurs under the blue sky. That looks a curtain call, but flowers will not show until the next spring. Instead, green leaves come out.
