Autumn leaves, 紅葉 Koyo

When we say Koyo (紅葉, autumn leaves), it generally means the yellow leaves of ginkgo and the red ones of Japanese maple called Kaede カエデ or Momiji もみじ.

  Overview

Late November to early December is the best times for the Koyo-Autumn leaves viewing in Kamakura.  However, it deviates somewhat back and forth depending on the weather condition every year and the coloring status at each place is not necessarily the same.

Some green leaves of maple starts Auturmn coloring among the withering brown and still fresh green leaves.  Koyo season in Kamakura seems to come soon.  One concern is that the temperature is too high this year for this time.

Unfortunately, almost all gingko leaves have scattered before they turned yellow because those trees are high and showered salty rain directly in the typhoons.

As the whole in the city, more than a few Japanese maple leaves were withering with brown color but still green leaves were founded here and there.  We hope that those fresh leaves will turn red at the end of this month.

Early Nov. 2018

Leaves that look being autumn colored are actually withering.  Storm like onshore wind of the double typhoons in September spread salty rain and air all over the city, which damaged Japanese maple and ginkgo.  Unfortunately, it seems worse than last year.
