Autumn leaves, 紅葉 Koyo

When we say Koyo (紅葉, autumn leaves), it generally means the yellow leaves of ginkgo and the red ones of Japanese maple called Kaede カエデ or Momiji もみじ.

We hope that the typical coloring process and viewing spots in Kamakura shown below will be a good reference for your Koyo viewing.

  Overview - Past years

Late November to early December is the best times for the Koyo-Autumn leaves viewing in Kamakura.  However, it deviates somewhat back and forth depending on the weather condition every year and the coloring status at each place is not necessarily the same.

Late October, 2018

Leaves that look being autumn colored are actually withering.  Storm like onshore wind of the double typhoons in September spread salty rain and air all over the city, which damaged Japanese maple and ginkgo.  Unfortunately, it seems worse than last year.

Late October, 2017

Temperature was much lower for October and leaf-coloring began earlier than the past years. But unusual big typhoon came twice also in the month and they brought the strong onshore wind that poured salty rain on the leaves.

More than a few colored leaves withered before the peak of Koyo season because salt is the bad influence on the autumn color.

Nov. 24th, 2016

Snow fell in Kanto 関東-the greater Tokyo area on Nov. 24.  It was the first time in the last 50 years or more to have the snow in November in the Kanto region.  That unusual snow did not impact much on the progress of coloring, but destroyed the beautiful surface of walk-ways with fallen leaves in mountains.

  Koyo viewing spots

We introduce representative viewing spots as follows, but you will be able to see nice scenes at other places and even roadsides.  Walking around to find your favorite places and to see the difference of the coloring status at each spot are also a way of enjoying Kamakura's autumn leaves.
