Good time to view the Ajisai-hydrangea in Kamakura is ending.  Many of them in the city are still blooming with niece colors, but those at some seaside places are drying in the sun.   Hasedera announced that they would start to prune Ajisai flowers on July 1 and Meigetsuin said that they would do it on July 8.

Not yet

Good time to see Ajisai-hydrangea in Kamakura this year came about two weeks later than usual, and it's at the same time as JMA declared the beginning of Tsuyu (梅雨 Japanese rainy season) in early June.

Some flowers are still in a state of flower opening or coloring, but many of Ajisai in Kamakura are bloominng with deep colors.

Dried

Opening

Buds

Flower opening of Ajisai in Kamakura is coming a little late this year compared with past years.  Those flowers at most places still had many buds. On the other side, Ajisai in the sun like at Inamuragasaki Seaside Park are already being dried due to the unusual strong sunlight with less rain in May.

Meigetsuin 明月院

* People start making a long waiting-line a few hours before the gate opens at 8:30 a.m. Their purpose is to go to the best photograph spot right after the entrance. They will make another waiting line again to take pictures at that spot after the gate is opened.

* According to the temple's staff, they do not think of restriction of entry such as delivering the numbered tag at this moment and the peak of congestion is always before and just after the gate opening time. Without any oblicagion basis, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. might be the easiest time for walking around the garden.

* They also say that visitors are not allowed to touch any flower and be careful not to get their shoulders or arms touch flowers because the walk-way in the garden is not so wide for many walkers.

* Pruning is scheduled to start in the early July.

Hasedera 長谷寺

* People start gathering 30 minutes before the gate opens at 8:00 a.m..

* In Hasedera, numbered ticket for Ajisai Path which is a walk-route set only for the hydrangea period will be issued when the congestion for that walk-way in the garden becomes heavy.

*If we receive that numbered ticket when we enter Hasedera, we have to wait to enter the Ajisai Path until the time for the number comes. We are allowed to leave the temple and return later without paying admission fee again showing the admission-ticket and numbered-ticket on that day.

*Distribution of the numbered ticket may end early in the afternoon like around 3:00 p.m. when the scheduled time to enter the Ajisai Path reaches the last number for the late entry. We are sorry for the inconvenience in that case.

* We can walk around in the grounds beside the Ajisai Path anytime.

* Temple's staff say that the waiting-time to enter Ajisai Path at the peak in a day might be a little less than 1 hour for Mon. to Fri. and 2 hours on weekends.

* Pruning is scheduled to start in the early July.

Goryo jinja 御霊神社

Goryo jinja is a shirne, which does not have the engrance gate and we can enter anytime.  Therefore, many camera fans come to this spot to shoot Ajisai and Enoden train cars running in front of the Torii gate even in the early morning like 7:00am or ealier.

= Pruning =

Pruning is carried out at the beginning of July even though flowers are still good at some places such as Meigetsuin and Hasedera etc.  That maintenance is done every year so that those bush will have nice flowers next year.

  Ajisai viewing spots

We introduce representative viewing spots as follows, but you will be able to see nice scenes at other places and even roadsides.  Walking around to find your favorite places and to see the difference of the coloring status at each spot are also a way of enjoying Kamakura's Hydrangea.
