Hato Sable Toshimaya (Summary)

鳩サブレー 豊島屋

 About

Hato Sable Toshimaya

We have been making Hato Sable since we opened Toshimaya in Kamakura in 1894.  Thanks to customers, that pigeon-shaped cookie is loved as the most popular Kamakura's snack over 100 years.

Pigeon is a symbol of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu 鶴岡八幡宮 that was moved to the current place by Shogun Yoritomo as the Samurai Guardian Shrine in the 12th. Motif of the letter of "Hachi" is two pigeons.

We will continue to make Hato Sable as Hachimangu and many pigeons exist in Kamakura from now on, too.

- Kamakura in the late 19 C. -

At the end of the 19th century, western culture began to spread rapidly in Japan.

Overseas visitors to Kamakura increased those days and western confectionery made from butter, milk, and egg was also introduced.

However, those sweets did not become so popular first.  When Toshimaya started to make Hato Sable, Japanese cakes called Wagashi was still preferred.  It was 1950 and later that the western sweets spread explosively.
