達磨大師, Saint Dharma

Dharma Daishi (達磨大師, Saint Dharma) is a Buddhist priest known as the founder of Zen Buddhism. It's said that he was born in an Indian rich family some year in 4 - 6C. and became a priest in India.

Going to China, he trained himself by just sitting and looking at the wall in a cave at Shaolin Temple, also the famous place for its Chinese kung fu, for 9 years.  That is the origin of Za zen (Zen meditation) and it came to Japan in the Kamakura period.

Saint Dharma is the motif of Dharma doll.
