Autumn leaves, 紅葉 Koyo

When we say Koyo (紅葉, autumn leaves), it generally means the yellow leaves of ginkgo and the red ones of Japanese maple called Kaede カエデ or Momiji もみじ.

We hope that the typical coloring process and viewing spots in Kamakura shown below will be a good reference for your Koyo viewing.

  2019

Note! Two big typhoons came to the Japan main island in 2019 and gave Kamakura some damages.

Most major hiking trails were closed and no prospects for reopening.

   - We can't go to Shishimai and a viewing point begind Hansobo along Ten-en course for Autumn leaves.

   - Mandala Caves are opened and we can reach from Omachi and Kotsubo hiking entrances.

We can say that the good time for Koyo-Autun colors has come in Kamakura.

However, beautiful Koyo colors can be seen just partly. More than a few Japanese maple leaves, which were damaged by the salty wind and rain and had turned brown, are withering and are ending here and there.

Cloring of Japanese Maple in Kamakura are progressing at some places, but it's still a little early to enjoy Koyo viewing here.

It's said that the cold air at night and much sunshine during the day for the good coloring. We wish for that weather condition from now for the good Koyo viewing next week

More than a few Japanese Maple leaves had been colored brown due to the salty sea wind in the big typhoons in October. They are partially withering and we had better wait until the still green leaves will turn red in the late November.

Under such circumstances, the Japanese Maple in Ichijo Ekan's Villa near Hokukokuji started turing beautifully red. It seems that we will be able to see good Koyo here until early December.
